Art of Film
MATERIALS
Please bring to class every day the following: Notebook, Folder, Sharpened Pencil with eraser, Copies of all handouts and classroom materials (neat and in order) GRADING A. All daily participation, classroom assignments, homework, projects, presentations, quizzes, tests, and writings will receive a predetermined numerical point grade. Point totals assigned are in direct relation to the time devoted to the assignment. For example: A simple quiz or class participation exercise (daily) may be worth 10 – 50 points, a daily pop quiz or homework assignment 10 - 75 points; a presentation, 200; a project, 100 – 300… B. The point system is the basic averaging method. All points earned will be divided by the total assigned points. The number of points each marking period will vary depending upon the types of assignments.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This class is broken up into 4 large units, each of which involve at least 1 project.
1. Film Genres and History
Identifying various genres and historical trends within the art form of film.
2. Film Production
Recognizing aspects of film production as they relate and contribute to the finished product.
3. Film Sound
Identifying sources of sound as presented in films, and creating music scored for video.
4. Videography and Editing
Recognizing aspects of cinematography in context, and utilizing editing programs to create original video content.
Film Genres and History
iMovie Trailer Project
You will be creating 2 movie trailers in iMovie.
-Both trailers will be for the ONE movie plot (Citizen Kane).
-You will be creating 2 DIFFERENT trailers for that SAME movie plot.
-For example, if your movie plot was about prom king and queen:
1st trailer – “Fairy Tale” (cheesy… once upon a time there was a king and a
queen)
2nd trailer – “Scary” (evil plans to make sure they secure winning king and
queen)

Film Genres and History
iMovie Trailer Project

- Complete 2 separate script outlines according to each genre of the trailers (i.e. Fairy Tale and Scary)
- Complete 2 iMovie trailers:
- All worded sections are filled out and in line with the movie and trailer’s style
- Camera angles must be varied and maintain viewer interest
- Clearly defined visual cuts for each shot (not cut-off halfway through a motion or action)
- Match acting style and genre with each differing trailer (see examples above)
- Entire group must be involved somehow (activity grading will be in effect)
- Pick 2 songs of your own to match the music from each of the provided trailers in iMovie. During your presentation, you will play your trailers multiple times. Once with the iMovie default music, and again with each of your alternate song choices. The songs you choose should match the theme, mood, style, and genre of each film trailer.
- Present your trailers, explain your script outlines, and play your 2 songs
Film Production
Film Production Design Project
*CHOOSE: Your group will be given 3 options of single-scene scripts to choose from
*DESIGN: Each member of the group is responsible for one category of production design as it relates to the group’s chosen scene (see below for specific requirements in each category of design)
*JUSTIFY: Each design much be creatively justified or defended in both written form and expressed verbally during the presentation
*PRESENT: Each group member explains their specific design concept, budget and their justification as related to their group’s chosen scene
SETTING
-Use floorplancreator.net or planyourroom.com to create and submit a floor plan as a set diagram
-Explain why (relating to the scene’s script) you chose to organize and decorate the set this way
-$50 per sqft of set construction (framing, flooring, walls, paint, etc.)
-Research and screenshot items and prices for any and all furniture and decor (couches, tables, lamps, area rugs, curtains, etc.)
-Submit a budget report (itemized and total)
PROPS
-Must have at least 3 props per character, and at least 7 total
-Draw the initial placement of props on the floor plan set diagram
-Explain which character(s) will use each prop and why
-Research and screenshot items and prices for any and all props
-Submit a budget report (itemized and total)
LIGHTING
-How many lights, as well as placement and angles (on the floor plan set diagram)
-Explain the colors to be used and why (mood)
-Research and screenshot what kind of lighting equipment and their prices (lights, stands, gels, bulbs, control boards, etc.)
-Submit a budget report (itemized and total)
COSTUMES
-Research and screenshot all costume items and prices
-Coloring/drawing on blank body templates (1 per character)
-Explain why you feel these costumes are appropriate for the characters and scene
-Submit a budget report (itemized and total)
MAKEUP and HAIR
-Research and screenshot all items and prices for all makeup and hair styling needs
-Coloring/drawing on blank face templates (1 per character)
-Explain why you feel the makeup and hairstyles are appropriate for the characters and scene
-Submit a budget report (itemized and total)

Film Scoring and Sound Effects Project Checklist
CHOOSE a scene to score:

PLAN out desired sync points for sound effects and music
-At least 10 sound effect sync points
-At least 3 different musical sync points
DESIGN & PERFORM at least 10 synchronous sounds by using at least 2 of the following techniques:
-Foley sounds recorded directly into GarageBand on sync points
-Foley sounds recorded as samples and then performed in GarageBand using the keyboard sample instrument
-GarageBand instruments, such as drum set (NOT smart instruments or loops) performed in sync
COMPOSE music to accompany your chosen scene
-Include at least 3 different musical sync points
-Incorporate at least 4 GarageBand instruments of any kind (regular, smart, or loop)
-Overall mood (including tempo, instrument choices, as well as the style of the music) must be appropriate for the scene
EDIT & MIX audio as needed
-Make sure all sync points are lining up with the corresponding visual
-Work to achieve a proper volume balance between and within both sound effects and music

Videography and Editing
Infomercial Project Checklist
- Pick a product/service/organization/cause (must be fake)
- Write and memorize a script for an infomercial about your choice
- Film A-roll of yourself as the subject (company spokesperson) doing the infomercial
- Download and import stock videos for B-roll
- Add appropriate background music from provided stock audio and/or your own
- Add sound effects from provided stock audio and/or your own
- Use more than one transition type
- Use titles at least one time
- Add some kind of personal touch such as: effects, GIF, Backgrounds, etc. (maybe as an intro or outro logo animation for example)
- 45-60 seconds total
