Music Appreciation
MATERIALS
Please bring to class every day the following: Notebook, Folder, Sharpened Pencil with eraser, Copies of all handouts and classroom materials (neat and in order) GRADING A. All daily participation, classroom assignments, homework, projects, presentations, quizzes, tests, and writings will receive a predetermined numerical point grade. Point totals assigned are in direct relation to the time devoted to the assignment. For example: A simple quiz or class participation exercise (daily) may be worth 10 – 50 points, a daily pop quiz or homework assignment 10 - 75 points; a presentation, 200; a project, 100 – 300… B. The point system is the basic averaging method. All points earned will be divided by the total assigned points. The number of points each marking period will vary depending upon the types of assignments.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This class is broken up into 4 large units, each of which involve at least 1 project.
1. Music as Identity
The exploration of music in each student’s personal background.
2. Elements of Music
The recognition and application of the elements of music.
3. World Music and History
The study of a variety of historical eras and world cultures as pertaining to music.
4. Musical Theater
The analysis and design of music’s role in the art form of theater.

•What music do you “secretly” love? Why is it a secret?
•What do you think your musical choices say about you?
•What do you hope it says about you?
3. Song Specific Reflection Questions (40 pts – 10pts each)
•When did you first hear this song?
•What does this song represent to you?
•Is there a specific moment in the song that is significant to you?
•Is this a piece of music that you share with friends or family? Who?
4. Script (60pts)
5. Final Audio Collage (100pts)
Total Project Point Value = 200pts

- ABA form with a 2 measure CODA (each A and B section is 4 measures long in 4/4 time signature).
- From top to bottom – Xylophone (treble clef), Boomwhackers (in bass clef, using only 2 notes), Tambourine, and Hand drums (ostinato).
- AT LEAST ONE INSTANCE OF EACH – eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, quarter rests, half rests, & whole rests.
- Each instrument must be playing something DIFFERENT from, but in support of the others.
Song Writing Project Checklist and Rubric
- Chords for each measure
- Written using Roman Numerals
- Chords must follow chord leading rules (as shown in the chart on pg 1 of packet)
- Write the 3 notes of the chord (the “triad”) next to the Roman Numeral
- Bass notes (whole notes in bass clef) corresponding to the “root,” or first note, of each chord
- Melody notes (various pitches and rhythms in the treble clef)
- Each measure must begin and end with notes from the chord
- The middle may contain any of the following:
- Chord Tones (notes that ARE from the chord)
- Passing Tones (passing from one chord tone to another)
- Upper Neighbors (going up and back down to a chord tone)
- Lower Neighbors (going down and back up to a chord tone)
- Lyrics
- Syllables must match up with each rhythm.
- Syllables may be elongated over multiple notes/rhythms,

- Verse and Chorus lyrics must be different from each other.
World Music and History
Project Checklists and Rubrics vary. For this unit, the students decide which famous composer they would like to research, and present that information in one of a number of different ways (i.e. a Jeopardy Game, a Board Game, a CD cover and jacket with info, etc...) Each presentation also serves as helpful mid-term review for the rest of the class.

Each group is responsible for writing and arranging
ONE SCENE and ONE SONG
Written Portion:
- FULL SCENE leading up to the song
- At least 2 characters speaking throughout the scene
- At least 10 lines in total
- SONG LYRICS shown in the following Form
- verse 1
- Chorus
- Verse 2
- Bridge
- Song Form: Intro, Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Outro
- All lyrics are sung or rapped in rhythm along with the music
- Change or add instruments/loops in each new section (verse, chorus, bridge)
- Overall, use at least 4 different categories of instruments
- Must use at least 2 Smart Instruments
- Volumes are adjusted for each track
